When the people talk about the intellectual progress of the people of Japan

they hardly ever have her women in their mind.

While it is true that Miss Japan has almost as good a chance for education as her brother

she has not made such progress as he has.

But an incident that happened the other day at Columbia University tends to show that

she is coming closer to ger brother in this respect.

Miss Tsuru Arai,a young Japanese woman,

passed the final examination for doctor of philosophy at Columbia last Saturday.

This is the first time that any woman if her nationality acquired that degree.

(As a matter of fact a very few Japanese men are able to get that degree

in a university of such high standing as Columbia.)

Miss Arai came to this country sbout four rears ago to study

after having graduated from the women’s College in Tokyo and has been at Columbia ever since.

She studied psychology under Profs.

Thorndike,Cattell and others

She has written the dissertation for the degree,

entitled“Mental Fatigue,”which is in the process of orienting and will be made public before long.

She has are a remarkably facile command of French,

German,English-and her own language of course T.H.

人々が日本の人々の知的進歩について話す時、彼らの女性は、ほとんど頭にありません。

女性は、彼女の兄弟と同じくらい教育のチャンスがあることは事実ですが、彼女は彼のような進歩を遂げていません。

併し、コロンビア大学で先日怒った事件は、彼女がこの点でドイツの兄弟に近づいている事を示す傾向があります。

若い日本人女性の新井鶴子さん

先週の土曜日にコロンビア大学で心理学博士の最終試験に合格しました。

日本人の女性で初めてその学位を取得した人です。

新井さんは、東京の女子大学を卒業してから4年間、コロンビア大学に在籍しました。

彼女はソーンダイクをはじめいろいろな教授のもとで心理学を学びました。

そして、「精神疲労」という学位論文を書きました。

オリエンテーションの過程にあり、間もなく公開されます。

彼女は、フランス語・ドイツ語・英語そして母国語の非常に使いやすい命令を持ってゐます。
